Modern Civil Infrastructure Developers Need to Understand the Significance of Segmental Structure Inspection

Segmental structure inspection is a relatively new method for the examination of a building’s external building elements. This form of the inspection involves looking inside the building in a manner to detect and document the integrity of the different structural members. The most typical members that are inspected during this kind of inspection are columns, rafters, beams, trusses, girders, and floor systems. This inspection type is extremely helpful in detecting problems before structural damage occurs to the building. Segmental structure inspection can help the building owner to take appropriate action to repair any damages before they become significant so that the building can remain structurally sound.

Structural systems like walls, ceilings, floors, and other building components are constructed in various ways. Some of these systems are masonry, while others are made of steel or lumber. A masonry building may be cracked or have major weaknesses in the structure. However, a masonry building may also be structurally sound with only minor cracks or weak areas in the construction. A wooden building, on the other hand, maybe completely destroyed if there are major flaws or weaknesses in the foundation.

What does the Segmental Structure Inspection Identifies?

Segmental inspection is an inspection method that identifies the different structural elements of a building in detail. This helps to ensure that these components are well aligned and maintained. These components include joists, walls, ceilings, and floor systems. Each of these elements plays an important role in a building’s overall structural integrity. If any of these elements are not well-maintained, the building’s overall structure can suffer serious damages.

The inspection method used to identify each of the different sections of a building is called the perimeter line. The PLS is drawn around the perimeter of the building using different methods including an electronic eyeball method. Another method called the site survey is performed by taking digital pictures of the building. This technique is sometimes combined with the PLS so that you get a better picture of the building as a whole. You will notice that the drawings of the PLS show different levels of insulation of the building. If the insulation levels are not maintained, this can lead to significant energy costs.

The Reason behind PLS Segmental Inspection

One of the main reasons why the building would need the PLS segmental inspection is if it is a steel building. Most steel buildings are built with flat roofs and horizontal framing. Using PLS, you can easily see the different steel bars or beams that are located on the roof of the building. It will also allow you to determine if there are any gaps in the steel framing, which can lead to moisture intrusion.

If a building has a poor roof, then the PLS will show any signs of corrosion. Corroded steel bars will not only cause your roof to rust but can also weaken the building’s entire structure. Even the frame of the building can start to buckle when there are too many bolts or nails exposed. This means that a complete inspection of the building’s entire structure has to be performed. The building’s framing can be replaced with a new one or renovation of the entire building can be done.

You can also use the PLS for inspecting the structural integrity of the building’s doors and windows. You should be able to identify any discrepancies in the way the door opens and closes. It is also important to check for the same discrepancies in the way the windows are opened and closed. By performing an indoor or outdoor PLS inspection, you will be able to determine whether a building has suffered from water infiltration or whether the building’s structure is sound. This information can then be used to help determine whether the building’s safety standards have been violated.
