The United Kingdom is splendidly gifted with energy resources. Historically, the country depended on coal mining and only cautiously ventured into nuclear energy in the mid-1950s. In the 1960s, the U.K. turned to natural gas and oil buried below the North Sea. Though the natural resources are lessening, the creation of primary energy still accounts for 10% of Britain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a much advanced share than in the mainstream developed countries.

With the low-cost vehicle and the reach of electricity, our society’s energy use changed forever. Power plants became better and larger, until we had very big coal plants and hydroelectric dams. Power lines extended hundreds of miles between cities, bringing electrical energy to country areas during the Great Depression. The inexpensive car made suburbs possible, which in turn made cheap cars essential, feeding the cycle of suburban sprawl.
