Dairy farming and milk products are one of the largest businesses over the world. Milk and the products made out of it occupy the single largest shelf space in any retail outlet. Amul (India) – Amul (short for Anand Milk Union Ltd) is an Indian dairy brand formed in 1946 which is not just a milk and butter brand, it covers all the entire long tail of milk products including yogurt, ice-creams, milk chocolates, ghee(an Indian traditional culinary ingredient made of saturated fats) and anything you name it. Amul has it’s origin in India’s post independence strive to achieve self sufficiency in child nutrition. Began as a people’s co-operative movement funded by government in the 60s, Amul has grown into a power brand. Using ‘Amul Girl’ as their everlasting advertising mascot, the brand has captured multiple generations with their cheerful and peppy image. The trust Amul brand build up in it’s billion strong customer base is not just because they provide good quality product but also connect with people of India through their print campaigns which refer to relevant affairs such as emergency period or UK airlines authorities conducting virginity test on Indian women.

  1. Meiji (Japan) – Meiji Co., Ltd. is the major dairy industry of Japan established in 1917 which not only provides dairy products but also food supplements like “Toromeiku”. Their line-up also includes Soft-drinks, chocolate bars and Pizza. Meiji also popular for innovative products such as Meiji Probiotics. This product is good for health and tastes great too! Other than this, “Oishii Gyunyu” the bestselling milk brand has the production capability to prevent the milk from going off-taste during pasteurization. The success behind Meiji Company is that they take risk in dairy industry which sometimes costs a lot. In December 2011 Meiji Diaries came into news because they had to recall around 400,000 cans of baby products because of accidental radioactive contamination.

  2. Fonterra (New Zealand) – Fonterra is a local dairy brand grown out of New Zealand and owned by around 10,000 farmers. It was formed in 2001 by two largest companies, Kiwi Co-operative Dairies and New Zealand Dairy Group. Fonterra is so trusted as a dairy brand in New Zealand that the company even acquired the dairy dessert and yogurt business of Nestlé Australia. The key brands of Fonterra are Mainland (Cheese), Tip-Top (ice-cream), Anlene, Anmum and Anchor (Milk). The company aims to give more access to funds by which it can gain global growth. Additionally, Fonterra also provides great incentives to farmers, so that they can increase their investment in Fonterra shares. In past, Fonterra also faced great issues like in 2008 “Sanlu milk Scandal” (China Dairy Company 43% owned by Fonterra). It was found that baby infant milk contain contamination of substances like melamine. In 2013 Fontarra again came under fire when they had to recall their products for possible Clostridium contamination. Rather than providing new product for increasing their sale, Fonterra mainly focuses on business strategies to expand market share.
  3. Dairy Crest (UK) – Dairy Crest was established in 1981 as the processing unit of Milk Marketing Board. Today, it delivers milk to more than 700,000 household by their door to door milkman and other services. Additionally, Dairy Crest includes Country Life butter and milk, Utterly Butterly, Cathedral City Cheddar cheese, Vitalite, Frijj and Clover. It’s now listed on London Stock Exchange. Dairy Crest Supplies milk, cheese, drinks and spreads. This company also provides online booking for their product which is known as ‘milk&more’. In September 2014, Dairy Crest took a decision of stop selling milk in glass bottle and their main focus will be now on tetra-pack products. The strategy of behind Dairy Crest’s progress is acquiring small dairy companies and establishing joint ventures while maintaining their brand name and quality.
  4. Wimm-Bill-Dann (Russia) – Wimm-Bill-Dann dairy brand was established in 1992. Company name itself reflects the founder’s love towards Wimbledon tennis tournament. The company is listed as word’s No. 3 in juice and No.1 in baby milk production. To cash in WBD’s reputation, in December 2010 Pepsi Co agreed to buy 66% of its shares for $3.8 billion. WBD has more than 1000 types of dairy drinks and yogurts and even around 150 types of fruit juice and drinks as well. WBD aims to expand as much they can by providing great taste with quality ingredients. Their most popular brand are “J7″, “Favourite Garden” (Russian: “Любимый сад”), “100 % Gold Premium”, “Jolly Milkman” (Russian: “Весёлый молочник”),”House in a village” (Russian: “Домик в деревне”) and “Agousha” (Russian: “Агуша”).
