Things you should consider when designing a company uniform

Your company uniform is about much more than practical clothing. It has to do many different jobs and incorporate a wide variety of things including brand identity, safety and flexibility.

It is important to make sure that you take all of these things into consideration when designing a uniform in order to ensure that the finished article not only looks great but also performs all of the things that you need it to.

Buying a stock uniform can seem like the quick and easy option for many businesses, but it can often fail to meet all of the needs of the people who wear it. Designing your own uniform might sound like a huge undertaking, but in the right hands it can be surprisingly simple and ensures that it ticks all of your boxes.

Comfort

A uniform is likely to be worn by an employee more than any other item of clothing that they own, so it is important that it is comfortable. This means that it needs to be made from suitable fabrics and have an appropriate fit to ensure that it allows for a full range of movement. If your employees work in humid environments then you will need breathable fabrics, whereas outside workers will have warmth as a priority.

When fitting a uniform, it is impossible to estimate, as you are most likely to get it wrong or cause offence. Instead, supply each member of staff with a size guide and ask them to choose what will fit them best.

Colour schemes

Choosing the colour of your uniforms is not just about picking something that looks nice, it is about fitting in with your company ethos. Every member of your staff is a representative of your business, so you need to think about what impression your uniform will make when people see it.

You should make sure that they compliment your logo in order to maintain a form of brand identity and think about which colours suit your industry.

Retail workers benefit from brighter colours so that customers can identify them on the shopfloor, whilst assembly lines and mechanics are better suited to darker colours which can hide stains and help them to remain looking neat.

Providing contrast between your colours is a classical approach and is visually very effective without pushing some members of staff into more daring colour schemes that they may not be comfortable with.

Personalisation

Choosing a uniform in the right colours is one thing but adding your logo to garments is the perfect way to show who is part of your team.

These can be embroidered or printed on to t-shirts, sweaters, coats and even high visibility items to really help promote your business and let everyone feel part of the company itself. With your business name proudly displayed, every member of staff will become a walking advertisement for you.

Quality

Ross Crayton, Managing Director of Core Workwear, specialists in personalised workwear commented, Choosing good quality items is very important. They may initially seem more expensive, but they are likely to last longer and therefore cut down on the number of times that you will need to replace them.”

Particularly in the case of garments which are intended for safety or protection from the elements, you need to ensure that you offer your employees the very best that you can in order to make them feel safe and comfortable at all times.

Your uniform should unite your team, so make sure it is something that can work for everyone. It needs to perform a role and be practical, but it should also be something that your team can love and enjoy wearing, so designing it yourself can ensure that you get exactly what you want.
