What is HIPAA compliance? Do you need compliance for your mobile app? Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was brought into action in 1996. With the rise of internet based applications dealing with medical data, it is now mandatory that all medical apps need to be HIPAA compliant. However, in mobile app market is not proactively regulated and many medical organizations release apps without considerations to the security of patient data. One might assume that compared to financial data such as bank account information, retail ecommerce transactions etc., medical data is not as interesting for the hackers. However, in last few years we’ve seen multiple attacks on healthcare industry. In 2015 alone, 134,383,542 medical records were stolen from various organizations. The situation has been worse due to the fact that investment in medical data security has been very limited compared to other IT related operations. It is time to wake up.
