Packaging Label Design

When it comes to making your product stand out from the crowd, there’s no trivializing just how important the label design is. Labels are responsible for catching the consumer’s eye and communicating the brand and product’s purpose. Studies show that as many as 70 percent of purchase decisions are made in-store at the point of purchase, so making sure your product features a well-designed label is more critical than ever.

Whether you’re designing a label from scratch, or re-purposing or refreshing a design, follow these tips to create a label that will encourage shoppers to tune out the noise and choose your product.

Create a Distinct Brand Identity

First thing’s first. Your brand’s identity should be consistent across all mediums – from your website to the store shelf. Begin by deciding what message you want to communicate to your customers, then decide what imagery and text will concisely convey your message on store shelves. This should be the starting point for all your packaging and labeling to create easily recognizable and cohesive branding.

Make your Label Design Stand Out

Once you’ve decided what your brand as a whole will look like, you can begin to think about the label itself. While there are a number of ways you can make your label stand out, a few of our favorite ideas include the use of fluorescent inks, lamination (to avoid smeared ink and unsightly tears), and visually striking graphics and fonts. Take a look at your competitors labels, and decide how you can differentiate your product.

Maximize the Customer Experience

Think about the factors that drive your own purchase decisions – clean, easy to read labels with appealing colors and bold graphics are generally more desirable than loud, busy labels.

Know your customers, and design a label to appeal to their needs, making sure that the product’s purpose is easy to identify on the label. Use words like “Better,” “Improved,” “New,” and “Special,” to emphasize what makes your product different. Think about how you can create an emotional connection between the shopper and your product using words, phrases, and images that are relevant to your customers’ needs.

Keep Them Coming Back

Encourage repeat purchases by using quality materials and printing processes to ensure that the label will last long after the buyer removes it from the shelf (or receives it in the mail). A good label can withstand the packaging, shipping, and stocking process without enduring any damage. Well-thought out branding and a quality label will allow customers will be able to easily identify your product for years to come.
