Did you know that fragrances belonged to specific families? While some people like to experiment with different fragrance families, others like to stick to a particular family for lifetime. Each family has cluster of fragrances under it and one can select the fragrance that seems most suitable.

Here are some of the most common fragrance families:

Citrus family – Majority of the eau de Colognes belong to this category. Essence of fresh lemons, grapefruits, oranges, mandarin, bergamot etc is found in these perfumes. Sometimes floral fragrances, spices and wooden essences to citrus family perfumes uplift the scents to a higher level. Their effects are also long-lasting. Some examples in this regard are Annick Goutal’s Eau d’Hadrien, Clarins Eau Dynamisante, Acqua di Parma Colonia etc.

Oriental family – This is one of the most popular perfume families, which are used by innumerable people globally. These perfumes are exotic and rich in fragrance and are preferred by people who love to wear loud perfumes. Some of the key ingredients that are used in these perfumes include exotic florals, vanilla, incense, musk, labdanum, ambergris, woody notes, tonka bean etc. These fragrances have a soft, warm and sensual feel. Variations are also being brought about in these fragrances – like soft oriental and floral oriental. Fougere – This family of fragrance is also popularly known as Aromatic Fougère. The characteristic smell of these perfumes is woodsy and herbaceous. Floral family – Floral fragrances are mainly manufactured keeping women in mind. While some floral fragrances are light and mild, some are quite bold and strong. The most common fragrances used in floral perfumes include that of tuberose, jasmine, rose, gardenia, lily, peony etc. There are distinct subcategories in floral families of fragrances – floral bouquets and single floral fragrances. The single floral fragrances are mainly made from extracts of single flower like rose, lily, bluebell etc. Some examples in this regard are Penhaligon’s Lily of the Valley; Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose etc. on the other hand are floral boutique perfumes. Chypre – This family of fragrance has been there since a long time and is very popular with people. The fragrance has a timeless and classic appeal and is a mix of exotic fragrances. These fragrances contain oakmoss-woody elements as well as citrus notes and are extremely rich in flavor. One of the most prominent ingredients used in this family of fragrances is that of patchouli. Agent Provocateur fragrance, Guerlain’s Mitsouko and Clinique’ Aromatics Elixir are some of the best perfumes in this category.
