An employee finishes up her free lunch at the Mexican restaurant with a few co-workers who have switched to different departments, and heads across the company campus to her main office space. She arrives early for her 2pm brainstorming session, so she rearranges the walls and furniture to provide enough space for up to 15 people, in case anyone else feels like joining the impromptu meeting. A group of her closest friends at the company have been holding these informal meetings for a few weeks as they develop a new App that will be usable on their company’s website. They haven’t finished working out all the details yet, it might take another month or so. They also haven’t directly spoken to any company leadership about the idea, although a few have walked past their meetings and listened for a few minutes, even offering some suggestions.

After the meeting, she goes to the bank to deposit last week’s paycheck, and meets up with some other friends for some relaxing video games at the arcade. She and a colleague take two of the bikes leaning under a tree outside the arcade and head to the second campus, connected to the first by an underground tunnel, for a weekly wrap-up meeting. Every person she passes is an employee of her company, despite the fact that it seems like they are cycling through a small downtown area. She grabs dinner at the sushi restaurant with one of the guys that started showing up for the App development meetings and they arrange to get dinner off-campus sometime the next week. It was a good day.

That day sounds like a page torn from most college diaries, what with the free food, closed campus, control over your work schedule, encouragement of collaboration and social interaction, and even the chance to find your soul mate. Despite this being a dramatized example, it is far from fiction, particularly for more than 2,000 employees who work at the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The social networking giant, who consistently bring in $ 2 billion dollars in yearly revenue, take their role in society quite seriously. They understand that the main use of the website is as a social platform and the opportunity it offers to build professional, personal, and social relationships with ease is why it caused such a revolution in modern culture. It would seem disingenuous of the company culture to not reflect those same philosophies in their attitude toward employees.

There are plenty of reasons why Facebook has been consistently ranked as one of the happiest companies to work at. In fact, it usually tops the list. Like many other technology titans, Facebook does offer a rather spectacular list of perks that make every employee spend less money and have a lot more fun while technically at work. However, this is far from unique in the digital corporation sphere, with companies like Google, Apple, Amazon, and Yahoo all offering similarly attractive benefits. Yet, Facebook still manages to maintain an edge in the area of employee satisfaction and consistently brings in new employees who recently cut ties with some of these other prestigious companies.
