What’s eating away our Earth? Wastage! And what’s the worst form of wastage? – Food. We are living in the 21st century and we ask this to ourselves that why are we not in a future where flying cars and hover boards are a reality but how often do we question ourselves about the rampant food wastage? Funny thing is that many first world societies treat it as a matter of fact and see it as an indicator of abundance and affluence. Well we all will have to pay the price, eventually. Maybe not our generation, maybe not even the next one but the one after that will see the damaging effects of our actions. Interestingly, it is not just the first world countries that are contributing to food waste. Third world countries and the countries rich in food production are also a part of this trend. Countries with low GDP often don’t implement proper food storage facilities and large amount of food produce goes bad. Large amounts of commodities like rice, wheat, potatoes and onions are often dumped in the ocean as they can’t be exported in time or stored. This is where global trade laws also play their part. Poor distribution mechanism for food is a major reason for food loss. Lets look at this artistic infographic from Civilian Bar and Kitchen, an Australian restaurant from Darlinghurst that describes some of the food waste related statistics.
