A few weeks back we moved into a stunning 112-year old house which is situated in the historic district of our town. We are going to rent it for a while and in the future have plans to buy the place. The landlord is friendly and made us feel as if it were our home. The owner and his wife have contacted the local affiliate for natural pest control services to check for pest problem before renting the house to us. I have lived in many houses, and I’ve never used chemical pest control methods.

I’m sensitive to chemicals and know more about the negative effects it brings to our bodies and the environment as well. So whenever I live if the place is infested with pests I use natural and non-toxic alternatives to stay pest free.I also tried the natural remedies that I came across in the Nycitypestcontrol.com website.

So, here are some ways in which you can rid household pests

Termites

1. Sand barriers

It can be used as a preventive measure to avoid underground termite invasion. Termites cannot enter through sand as they do not retain moisture which is essential for termite survival. Sand barriers can be applied at crawl spaces such as pier and beam foundation, under slab foundation, terraces, patios, and steps. This is a natural method and provides long-term protection. But, it should also be regularly inspected.

2. Nematodes

Nematodes are microscopic worms and are one of the best ways to treat termites for individuals who are sensitive to chemicals. It can be pumped to the infected areas, and they will destroy the termites

3. Boric acid bait

Place it in the areas where you want to eliminate termites. It will attract the termites, and when they consume it, they will die. This is a non-toxic way of eliminating them. It also works on roaches.

Carpenter ants

Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

Sprinkle it in the areas where they are active and on the source. Always buy food grade DE as other forms are dangerous.

Prevention

Clean/fix/replace any rot wood or wood that was damaged by moisture as it is the breeding grounds for carpenter ants.

Other remedies

1. Cucumber

Place some fresh peels of cucumber at the places where the pests enter. This works on ants, roaches, and silverfish.

2. Mint leaves

Scatter them around to repel ants and flies

3. Eucalyptus oil

Add a few drops of the oil on a cloth and place it in the areas of infestation. It effectively gets rid of flies and moths.

4. Soap spray

If you want to get rid of an insect instantly, mix water and soap flakes in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture directly on the bug. The pest dies quickly as the soapy substance breaks down the exoskeleton and the solution enters inside the bug.

I like it better when bugs live outside the house. But, if they get inside, I will use the above solutions to drive them away.
