That a fake video could influence troop morale during wartime reveals the terrifying scale at which such content operates—not just misinforming, but actively shaping geopolitical outcomes.

2. UAE Golden Visa Rumor (2025)

Just weeks ago in July 2025, a UAE-based consultancy falsely claimed in a press release that the investment requirement for the coveted Golden Visa had been drastically lowered. Expat forums, startup groups, and immigration consultants across Asia and Europe went into a frenzy.

The rumor spread with the velocity only AI-generated content can command—formatted well, language-checked, and virality-primed. It took official clarifications by Khaleej Times and Gulf News to clear the air.

But by then, countless individuals had fallen prey to fake consultancies, false hopes, and bot-fueled disinformation machines.

3. Archita Phukan and the Deepfake Porn Scandal (2025)

The most horrifying case comes from Assam, India. In early 2025, Archita Phukan became the target of a brutal misinformation attack when her ex-boyfriend used AI tools to fabricate pornographic videos and images in her likeness as revenge. These were distributed online, and without proper checks, even covered by regional digital media as a story of an ‘Indian porn actress making it big in the West.’

India Today later published a report exposing the fake narrative, but the reputational damage was done. The report also points to a very disturbing aspect of this incident. Firstly, the impersonation and fake account has been active for 5 years during which the ex-boyfriend not only got his revenge but made millions from monetized content. Secondly, at one point a real world celebrity, American pornstar Kendra Lust collaborated with the fake AI generated Archita’s fake account and legitimized the fraud.

This wasn’t just harassment. It was character assassination at a global scale, enabled by cheap tools and a news cycle that prizes speed over substance.

Truth Moves Slow, Lies Go Viral

Each of these cases illustrates a disturbing pattern. Disinformation no longer stays in forums or fringe channels—it spills into boardrooms, battlefields, and bedrooms.

Our brands, our platforms, and our regulators have not built enough resilience into their systems. They still rely on post-facto denials, PR cleanups, or legal action—long after damage has been done.

The Way Forward: Speed + Ethics + Verification

If brands and platforms want to remain trusted, they must:

  • Build pre-emptive detection systems that auto-flag synthetic media.
