Tired of finding a meaningful job in your home state? Willing to steer your career in a new direction, but that means to shift to an entirely new city. Of course, relocating to a new place for a job could be nerve-racking and one of the most stressful changes in life. So, if things become stressful, remember that the reason for your move is to bring a positive change in your life. Initially, you will have to work hard to make it all work. So, for a successful transition, here’s what you need to do –
1. Stay Organized
You can breathe a sigh of relief if you plan your move well in advance. Detailed planning is quintessential in a long-distance cross-country move. You will have to make plans regarding your old home and finding a new one, the logistics, to-do lists et al. Thus, with a list in hand, you will stay on top of everything.
2. Seek help from your Employer
The best way to avoid a lot of stress is to seek help from your employer. They might have dealt with such situations for other employees as well. Your colleagues can best help you in locating a place to live, to eat and much more. Some companies even offer relocation assistance, you can ask if your company provides the same. So, begin your search with asking for moving quotes by moving and packing companies. Once you have gathered an idea, present detailed moving estimate to your employer.
3. Family is Above All
Relocation is certainly a daunting task, but it becomes even more challenging when you have kids and a working spouse. After finalizing your apartment, you must start looking for local schools to avoid any compromises with your kids’ education. Also, help your spouse in searching for relevant job opportunities. You can take help of classified sites, local newspapers, and online job hunt portals. Besides these resources, I would highly recommend LinkedIn to look for local job offers.
4. Jump to Local Forums
The internet has made it very easy to connect with people based in different parts of the globe. There are dedicated forums where you can talk to local residents and clarify your concerns about cost of living, safety, neighborhood etc. This is significant because there are major differences in the cost of living in different US cities and these can be compensated for in your salary if you know them in advance. Moreover, you can also make good friends there by joining the new city specific forums. Here is a great example from city-data forum.
5. Don’t Make Any Long-term Commitments
It is advisable that you do not run into making any kind of long-term commitments because it is very likely that you might end up not liking your surroundings. So, renting initially is a great way to settle in a new neighborhood. What many people do is either commit to long-term lease or straight away buy home in the new city only to realize that they don’t like the neighborhood or the job.
