Its been 7 years since The Local Brand was launched and we started writing about small businesses and local brands which deserve to be brought into the spotlight. We have a section on our website which allows our readers to submit their nominations for the best local brand they can think of. Over the years we have received numerous great nominations, of which we are now publishing a list for the first time. All these businesses have gained a local favour because of their products and services. You’ll find them inspiring and you should recommend these brands to encourage them to grow in their respective areas. This is not a ranked list because they are all from diverse sectors and offer very different products or service. We hope you’ll love this list.

Based out of Boston, MA, this is a brand of women’s fashion clothing which connects to the #BlackGirlMagic movement popularised by CaShawn Thompson in 2013. The unique style of clothes available on BGM Apparel website is a cultural thing which is the essence of all local brands. We appreciate this nomination because of its products and the trends
etting nature. This is a great example of how an e-commerce website propelling a local brand.

The Royal Standard (USA) – Lifestyle Stores and eCommerce
Mark & Krista from Louisiana while on their trip to England in 1995 found a flag of the British Royal Family and realised the true meaning of the ‘Royal Standard’ in terms of a brand. They came back to start this chain of exclusive lifestyle stores across Southern USA which exude a sense of affluence and luxury. We like this brand in its very Southern charm and sophistication. They are not tied down by a niche but offer a wide range of items. They even offer custom upholstery and a unique party venue with French and English antique by the name of ‘The Crown’. Interesting concept after concept. You can find excellent outdoor furniture beside exclusive dinnerware right next to a collection of vintage jewelry.

SGF Fab Industries (India) – Engineering & Fabrication
A Mechanical Engineer having worked at various industries took the risk and started this own company in Bangalore in 1996. They started manufacturing and supplying cranes, material handling equipments and industrial fabrications. Today they boast of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, which is equipped with cutting-edge machines equipments. Their vision statement says – “We have continuously emerged successful in all our endeavours due to our customer-centric goals. Quality products, performance and reliability, thus our vision is clear to be a hero with our customers.”
This brand is really a good example of ingenuity and persistence. It goes on to show that even in the manufacturing of imposing industrial machinery, putting heart and soul could be a defining factor. Their impressive portfolio of clients says a lot about them.

NIOVI (Australia) – eCommerce, Baby Apparel
What comes to your mind when you hear ‘Organic Baby Clothing’? Well, if you are thinking of NIOVI then its awesome! This brand has one of the most unique proposition we have come across. This retail brand focused on baby clothing deserves adoration for the range of products they offer within the category. If you are a young parent then you would definitely swoon over it. Just checkout their look book and size chart.
Murugan who nominated the brand to us points out to a great fact about this brand – “it is the only brand that I know of in the children’s wear sector that is transparent about their supply chain and exclusively makes their clothing using GOTS certified cotton.” Furthermore, their CSR activity and recycling initiative tells us this is a conscious brand.

Nativo Amazon Acai Company (USA) – Food & Beverage
This Miami, Florida based brand is as fresh as its products. We haven’t seen a more colourful branding and that says a lot. The Acai berry and its health benefits are becoming very popular but we didn’t think that there would be a brand like this completely built around it. The Legend of Iaça is hair raising and utterly tragic story of how Acai berry was discovered. The website of Nativo Acai doesn’t fail to mention it. Yet, the transformation of this tribal fruit into a hip, modern day, superfood is fascinating. The brand’s super bright colour scheme also gets its element from the Pitaya (Dragonfruit) and Guarana Berry. To top it all off, Nativo has got a 12 time Brazilian Jujitsu World Champion Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu kicking and punching for them. Its a done deal!
Now, we are feeling hungry so we need to take a break but what you need to know is that the people behind Nativo found a really great opportunity in bringing these unique and rare flavours to the market. With wholesale being offered for their products, this brand shows appetite for expansion. Their co-operative model of harvesting and procuring raw material sounds environmentally sustainable. Its great to see a brand focusing on purity.

Auto Finish Clinic, Wrap Clinic & Rim Clinic (USA) – Automotive
People in Miami are design nuts. From brightly coloured surfboards to uniquely decorated boats, buildings and cars, you’ll know when you are in Miami. So when you need your car to stand out, you reach out to one of the best in the East Coast – the “Doctors” of the Clinic will take care of you.
The ingeniously branded Auto Finish Clinics and two of its sister brands the Wrap Clinic and the Rim Clinic are a triple threat when it comes to the vehicle customisation. Their focus on paint jobs, wraps and rims makes them a go to place for cosmetic modifications for cars and trucks. They even wrap entire boats. This is of course a very Miami thing but we like this brand for its proposition. That they are doing it for 25 years says a lot.

Big Daddy Party Bus (USA) – Transportation
At first we thought, what the hell is this? How will we categorise this brand? Then we started looking into it. Its a travel and transportation service. Yet, it unlike any other. Its a Party Bus guys! It takes you comfortably from one party to another! That’s just awesome. Its so niche but it makes so much sense. Well you just need to be in a college district to feel it.
They provide party bus rentals and event services in College Station & Bryan, Texas (USA). We like the concept. We like the fact that its providing safety to the party goers. We like the logo. Good vibes all the way!

Candere By Kalyan Jewellers (India) – eCommerce & Jewellery
When a new generation of entrepreneurs from a family business of traditional jewellers take to the online space, things sometimes come together like in the case of Candere. The website of the brand details the journey of it’s founder Rupesh Jain who launched the portal in September 2013 till the company was acquired by Kalyan Jewellers in 2017 in a deal of more than USD 5 Million.
So we believe that despite the fact that Candere does appear in this list, it is highly likely that it would not belong to the category of Local Brands as it goes to get global recognition soon.

How about an agency that can give you best of brand design, printing services for all your collateral, get you a fine website and do your professional photo shoot for products. We have found all this and more with Blue Rhino’s services.
We don’t use their services but looking at their website and Facebook page we can say it is a very well thought out set of options for brands. This is what a full service branding agency should be like.
In terms of their portfolio, they have some great logo design and website works. However their main website doesn’t do justice to their vast array of print work. All in all they are doing a great work in branding and that makes us mention them in this list although it is only for brands that are selling a retail product or service and we had decided not to include any agency here.

518 Renovations (USA) – Architect, Interior, Design Services
Local real estate services are so necessary! This Gloversville, New York based company is out there presenting an example. A very smart set of websites of which one is offering all architectural, building and construction and interior services while the other lists properties around the region. It’s very basic and probably needs more fleshing out but just check out their work and the before & after photos. They deserve attention and that’s why they are on this list.
